Technical Guide

What is a Monochromator & Spectrograph Good For?

Monochromators and spectrographs are the foundation of spectral selection. By utilizing diffraction gratings, they select narrow wavelength bands from broadband sources or disperse complex light onto multi-element detectors.

Optical Design & Principles

The Zolix Omni-λ series utilizes the asymmetrical Czerny-Turner design. Broadband light enters through an entrance slit, is collimated by a curved mirror, and is directed onto a diffraction grating.

The grating separates the spectral components by angle. A focusing mirror then focuses the dispersed light. Depending on the exit port:

  • As a Monochromator: A narrow exit slit allows only a single wavelength band to pass through. Rotating the grating changes the output wavelength (tunable source).
  • As a Spectrograph: The exit slit is replaced with a camera flange. The entire dispersed spectrum is captured simultaneously on a sCMOS/CCD detector array.

💡 Grating Selection Tip

Pairing your monochromator with the correct grating determines the system spectral range, dispersion, and resolution. Grating turrets support dual or triple mounts, enabling automatic switching between UV-optimized (e.g. 1200g/mm, blazed at 300nm) and NIR-optimized (e.g. 600g/mm, blazed at 1.0μm) models.

Core Scientific & Industrial Applications

Tunable Light Sources

By linking a broadband lamp (Xe, Halogen, Deuterium) to the input slit, the system outputs high-purity monochromatic light. Critical for characterizing detector Quantum Efficiency (QE), solar cells, and photochemical reactions.

Raman & Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Analyzing inelastic Raman scattering or Photoluminescence (PL) emission. Pair with deep-cooled CCD arrays (like our sCCD01AM) to capture weak molecular signatures, structural bounds, and semiconductor recombination kinetics.

Optical Filter Characterization

Precise transmission, absorption, and reflection measurements. Perfect for analyzing out-of-band blockings, steep cut-on edges, and peak transmission characteristics of dichroic mirrors and bandpass filters.

Plasma Diagnostics & Laser Emission

Resolving narrow atomic emission spectra in gas discharges, plasma reactions, and pulsed laser pulses. Long focal paths (like the 750mm Omni-λ750S) resolve lines separated by less than 0.03 nm.
