Bidirectional EDFA Amplifier (OPA, OBA) 1528-1568nm

The BEDF Series Bidirectional DWDM Optical Amplifier provides high-performance erbium-doped fiber amplification (EDFA) across the full ITU C-band (1528–1568 nm), supporting high-capacity transmission scales from 2 to 48 channels over a single fiber. Engineered for maximum slot density, the BEDF integrates two independent amplifier stages on a single board to deliver simultaneous bidirectional amplification. Specialized internal photonic components cleanly partition the spectrum, routing downstream traffic (even DWDM channels) through a high-power booster stage, while upstream traffic (odd DWDM channels) is directed through a low-noise pre-amplifier stage. The system features an advanced, software-driven “set-and-forget” Automatic Gain Control (AGC) mode that dynamically adapts pump laser profiles in real time.

Application context

Why this design is used

Application guidance is tied to the configured wavelength, fiber interface and optical-budget fields for this family.

Laboratory optical integration

Bidirectional EDFA Amplifier (OPA, OBA) 1528-1568nm: Laboratory optical integration depends on preserving the optical budget through the complete path. The 1528-1565nm wavelength specification sets source and detector compatibility. The fiber/interface entry (LC/APC, LC/PC, FC/PC, FC/APC, Special) must match the connected components.

Integration and compatibility

Use these checks to connect Bidirectional EDFA Amplifier (OPA, OBA) 1528-1568nm to the surrounding optical, mechanical and control system. Every value shown is taken from this model's own specification record.

Optical interface and fiber
Connector: LC/APC, LC/PC, FC/PC, FC/APC, Special
Specify connector polish and fiber architecture together. FC/PC, FC/APC and SMA interfaces, and single-mode, multimode and polarization-maintaining fibers, impose different return-loss, mode-field and alignment requirements.
Wavelength and loss budget
Wavelength: 1528-1565nm
Check the Fiber Optic Communication Data Links passband, insertion loss, return loss and power handling at the actual source wavelength; a nominal telecom-band label is not a substitute for the configured range.
Control interface
Power Supply: DC, AC
Match supply voltage, analog or digital command range, connector pinout and default optical state to the instrument interlock. Confirm the unpowered state explicitly — it decides what happens to the link on a power failure.
