Semiconductor Optical Amplifier

Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) 1250nm

The SOAB is a high-saturation-output-power, high-bandwidth, low-noise booster optical amplifier. It features a highly efficient InP/InGaAsP Quantum Well (QW) layer structure and a reliable ridge waveguide design, ensuring robust performance. The amplifier is housed in a standard 14-pin butterfly package, complete with an integrated thermoelectric cooler (TEC) and thermistor for precise thermal management. The SOAB is polarization-insensitive, amplifying all polarization states, making it an excellent choice for in-line amplification. It is available with either single-mode (SM) or polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber pigtails, both terminated with FC/APC connectors. For PM-fiber-pigtailed models, the connector key is aligned to the slow axis.

Application context

Why this design is used

Application guidance is tied to the configured wavelength, fiber interface and optical-budget fields for this family.

Laboratory optical integration

Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) 1250nm: Laboratory optical integration depends on preserving the optical budget through the complete path. The 1250nm wavelength specification sets source and detector compatibility. The fiber/interface entry (HI1060, PM980) must match the connected components.

Fiber-optic instrumentation

Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) 1250nm: Fiber-optic instrumentation depends on preserving the optical budget through the complete path. The 1250nm wavelength specification sets source and detector compatibility. The fiber/interface entry (HI1060, PM980) must match the connected components.

Optical interface and fiber
Fiber Type: HI1060, PM980 · Fiber Buffer: 0.9mm Tube
Specify connector polish and fiber architecture together. FC/PC, FC/APC and SMA interfaces, and single-mode, multimode and polarization-maintaining fibers, impose different return-loss, mode-field and alignment requirements.
Wavelength and loss budget
Wavelength: 1250nm
Check the Semiconductor Optical Amplifier passband, insertion loss, return loss and power handling at the actual source wavelength; a nominal telecom-band label is not a substitute for the configured range.
Control interface
Driver: Non
Match supply voltage, analog or digital command range, connector pinout and default optical state to the instrument interlock. Confirm the unpowered state explicitly — it decides what happens to the link on a power failure.

Technical FAQ

Integration questions for Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) 1250nm

Which fiber and connector does the Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) 1250nm use?
