Fiber Interferometer

Fiber Coupled 90° Optical Hybrid

The FCOH is a passive, micro-optics-based 90° optical hybrid designed for coherent optical signal demodulation, including BPSK and QPSK formats. It functions by mixing the incoming signal (S) with a local oscillator reference signal (L), generating four optical outputs corresponding to the vector sums and differences of the two inputs: S+L, S−L, S+jL, and S−jL. These outputs represent four quadrature states in the complex optical field space. The signals are then directed to two pairs of balanced photodetectors, enabling differential detection of the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components. This configuration allows the extraction of both amplitude and relative phase information through digital signal processing.

Application context

Why this design is used

Application guidance is tied to the configured wavelength, fiber interface and optical-budget fields for this family.

Laboratory optical integration

Fiber Coupled 90° Optical Hybrid: Laboratory optical integration depends on preserving the optical budget through the complete path. The 1260~1620 wavelength specification sets source and detector compatibility. The fiber/interface entry (900 um tube) must match the connected components.

Optical interface and fiber
Fiber Cover: 900 um tube · Fiber Length: 0.25m, 0.5m
Specify connector polish and fiber architecture together. FC/PC, FC/APC and SMA interfaces, and single-mode, multimode and polarization-maintaining fibers, impose different return-loss, mode-field and alignment requirements.
Wavelength and loss budget
Wavelength: 1260~1620
Check the Fiber Interferometer passband, insertion loss, return loss and power handling at the actual source wavelength; a nominal telecom-band label is not a substitute for the configured range.
